Ornament for Mom!
I made this little guy out of moss, cardboard, colored pencil, mod podge, and cut- outs from a field guide to flowers I found on the sidewalk. What fun I had!

Inspiration Wall Remix
Because I have been using many of the same pieces of paper for several years and because they are a little ragged, I thought I would freshen things up a little and combine them into something sturdy, new and fresh. I had a little hesitation about not displaying all of the images, and especially about cutting some of them up. However, in the end it turned out to be a lot of fun, and quite rewarding! (If you scroll down to my post from February 18th, you can see my previous inspiration wall.)

The Love Monster
Howdy. I was recently given some advice from my grandfather about making art that not only looks cool, but that people want to buy as well. SO, I thought that I would keep up with my strange creature theme, but add an element of familiarity to it. I chose the Love statue by Robert Indiana and added a little guy to it. The little love monster was inspired by a rutabaga with some really gnarly arm-like things all over it. The finished piece doesn't quite look like a rutabaga, but that doesn't bother me. Any ways, I am thinking about maybe getting this image printed on t-shirts in a couple different colors. What do you think?

Here is another finished image! Once again, I went barreling through the produce section at Whole Foods and found some turmeric. I must say, I love plants like ginger, turmeric, rutabagas, turnips, radishes, and whatever else is a little gnarly looking. My last piece was celery root. I honestly am not sure where I am going with these works- I just know that I enjoy making pieces that are both portraits and specimens at the same time.
So anyways, hope you enjoy! :}

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite smoothies I have made so far. It was inspired by one of Ani Phyo's smoothies in her book, Ani's Raw food Kitchen. I just took out the cashews and added almond milk instead of water. It is so smooth, creamy and delicious, as well as beautiful! Hope you enjoy it.
a generous handful of strawberries
a spoonful of raw coconut oil
half a vanilla bean, scraped
three dates (adjust for sweetness)
a little almond milk for creaminess
(I use unsweetened Almond Breeze, plain)

This is my inspiration wall. I am fascinated with natural textures like wood and grass, and also by handmade objects. I didn't used to use my own drawings as inspiration for myself, but now that I have begun to refine my drawing skills as well as my taste, I find that my own drawings really do express me and make me happy. Several of these are photos from my grandparents' National Geographic magazines from the 1970's, which I bring with me on every move. They have become wrinkled over time, but the nostalgic color schemes of these pieces never cease to energize me. Of course, my drawings are scattered about- guitar and hands, fruits and vegetables, and a couple other strange things- see if you can spot them! The rest are samples from paper companies, illustration magazines, and stuff I got at the flea market. Wherever I am living, I feel complete when I have my inspiration wall!

My Latest Piece, and the Process
This is currently my favorite method for creating images. I start out by doing the drawing with a pencil on paper. I was inspired by the beauty of a pear I found at Whole Foods. After I was done with the initial drawing on paper, I scanned it into Photoshop. I set the original drawing layer to "Multiply". I then proceeded to create several layers underneath the drawing layer- one for each of the different colors I was using- even separate layers for the shadows, highlights, and finally the frame. This of course made the colors and shapes much easier to maneuver. The result still has an earthy and natural look to it- but also a clean look because of its digital finalization.
